Saturday 12 & Sunday 13 October, 2024 - Cockle Creek to South Cape and Return
SOUTH COAST TRACK
42.2 km of supported freedom to Australia's far south

Compass Club South

LOCATION

Tasmania's South Coast Track will host it's seventh Compass Club event, a 42 and 21 kilometre out and back run to Australia's deepest south. 2024 will also  include a 7km Fun Run on the program.
Competitors will encounter chilly winds, sprawling plains, rocky cliffs and lengthy boardwalks amongst some of Australia's most stunning landscapes.

The event starts with a traditional indigenous Welcome ceremony, in the carpark of the community centre in the serene Cockle Bay. Competitors will make their way down Cockle Creek Road and onto the South Coast Track. The track winds through thick forest, solid boardwalks and a cool, tranquil valley. After a narrow and thick final 500 metres, competitors will meet a burst of sunshine on top of a seaside cliff, marking your arrival at the South East Cape.

Your obligatory photograph at Australia's most southern point will be taken, then turn around and head back towards the finish line in Cockle Creek, thus completing your 42.2 kilometre marathon.

CLIMATE

Cockle Creek experiences exceptionally high rainfall, humidity levels and numbers of cloudy days. It also experiences far below average daytime temperatures and overnight temperatures. Wind speed and numbers of clear days are below average.

The average temperatures in October for Cockle Creek are -
Low 7 degrees Celsius
High 18 degrees Celsius

HOW TO GET THERE
The Elements Running crew will be camping at Cockle Creek from Friday the 13th of October, and we encourage you all to camp with us. There will potentially be an air-conditioned mini bus leaving from Dover both mornings should you require to stay in the Huon Valley (dependant on numbers). More details will be provided on this option by request.

Cockle Creek is 148 km south of Hobart (2 hours drive). It can be reached by travelling along the Huon Highway (A6) through Geeveston. Take

the C635 past the Hastings Caves turn off, then follow the C636 rough gravel road through Lune River and Ida Bay to Cockle Creek.

Southport is the most southerly place to purchase petrol.

EVENT ROUTE

The Compass Club South event will start at the Community Centre on Cockle Creek Road, some 7km north of the start of the South Coast Track.

Given that October is mid-Spring and remaining darker in the morning, the 42km race will be underway by 7am. The later start time allows

competitors who camped time to freshen up, as well as allowing the bus leaving Hobart enough travel time.

Participants will run from the starters arch on Cockle Creek Road in a northern direction. Competitors will continue along Cockle Creek Road for approximately 5km, before turning around and heading south down Cockle Creek Road, around the Whale sculpture and onto the South Coast Track.

Competitors then take the South Coast Track from the walking trail car park, and travel approximately a further 7.5 kilometres to South Cape Bay,
having their photo taken at what is currently the most accessible southern most point of Australia. Runners will then turn back and do the reverse of the route just travelled, returning along Cockle Creek
Road to the finish line and thus completing their 42 kilometre marathon.
