CAPE YORK 2020
42.2 km of supported freedom to Australia's far north
Sunday September 20, 2020
The SKYTRANS Compass Club Northern Edition
Bamaga, Australia’s northern most settlement, is the start line for just the third ever marathon in the Northern Peninsula Regional Council Area.
Located 1000 kilometres north west of Cairns, it will be all hands on deck for the Bamaga community, as the tiny yet vibrant township look to create history in the race to Australia’s most northern tip. Bamaga will host a briefing and welcoming party the night before the history making event, which is hoped will provide lifelong stories for all those involved in the race. In 2020, we will also be adding a 7km Fun Run to the program.
Commencing at dawn on the outskirts of the quiet little town, a traditional Welcome to Country ceremony will herald the start of the race. Competitors will follow the current 4WD track all the way to the rocky outcrop, and race back to Bamaga before the North Queensland humidity really kicks in.
Bamaga has a tropical savannah climate with constantly high temperatures throughout the year. The dry season runs from early June to late November. The average temperatures in July for Bamaga are -
Low 21 degrees Celsius
High 25 degrees Celsius
